Name/History: The school is named after Winona Washburn Taylor (1855-1945), a Loveland pioneer and educator.
Mission Statement: Winona Elementary will provide a safe, purposeful learning environment focused on academic standards and social skills. This climate will enable all students to be successful while creating a commitment to the lifelong learning process.
Sense of community - Winona maintains a strong sense of community and we work hard to engage our families in the school environment. We have an active PTO that sponsors a fall carnival, winter movie night, and book fairs, and they support school projects and facilities by helping to purchase leveled library books, technology and playground equipment.
Positive Behavior Support - We are a PBS school that emphasizes a safe, positive learning environment with respect, responsibility, and fair-mindedness in all of our daily actions and interactions. We have been cited by the Colorado Department of Education as a model school for Positive Behavior Support.
Instruction - Winona maintains a strong emphasis on our core instruction areas of reading, writing, and mathematics and provides interventions to students who are not meeting grade-level expectations. We also emphasize critical thinking and problem- solving skills which are embedded in and taught throughout our curriculum.
Title I opportunities - Winona is a school-wide Title I school that provides many learning opportunities and special services for our diverse learners. We provide additional student learning services through Special Education, the Gifted and Talented program, and Title I interventions, and we have a very strong English Language Acquisition program for students learning English.
Environment - A Colorado Department of Education Title I School Support Team reports that our students feel safe and our parents feel welcome at Winona. Teachers and staff make student safety and engagement a priority, and parents say that they know teachers care about their children and strive for creating well-rounded children who are prepared for the future.
