Name/History: The school was named after Sarah Milner Smith, who was one of Loveland's first teachers. Her first classroom was in her home. She continued to teach at the old Washington School and in the Buckhorn Valley near Masonville. She was born in Canada in 1844 and died in Loveland in 1939.
Mission Statement: Sarah Milner staff, students, and parents will work together to help each individual acquire the knowledge, skills, and behaviors that will enable each to function to his/her potential, develop self esteem, and continue learning throughout life in order to be a contributing member of a constantly changing society.
Environment - Sarah Milner is proud to be a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) school. Our school motto is Respect, Achieve, My personal best. Our mascot is Sam the Ram. As a PBS school, we strive to encourage appropriate behavior by recognizing kids for doing the right thing. We have positive behavior recognition programs in place for individual students as well as classrooms. Students are recognized at quarterly awards assemblies for both academic achievement and outstanding character. Sarah Milner Elementary School provides an environment that embraces the positive character traits of respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, caring, citizenship, and fairness.
Partnerships - Sarah Milner Elementary School is fortunate to have an activeParent Teacher Organization (PTO) that provides support and services to the school community. PTO hosts several family events throughout the year including an ice cream social, school carnival, and talent show. PTO has provided financial support to replace playground equipment, plant grass on the playground, install a climbing wall in the gymnasium, and provide a computer-based literacy program. Sarah Milner Elementary School has benefitted from a partnership with Life Spring Covenant Church. Together the school and the church have been able to implement a mentoring program, offer after-school tutoring, host a community pancake breakfast, and offer after-school clubs.
Technology - The school is equipped with a Mac computer lab and a mobile Mac computer lab and students have access to computers in every classroom and the library. All students participate in computer classes every week. Teachers use a variety of technology to enhance lessons, motivate students, and monitor student progress.
Literacy Training - All teachers and staff at Sarah Milner Elementary School have received Comprehensive Early Literacy Learning/Extended Literacy Learning (CELL/ExLL) training. CELL/ExLL training is designed to meet the professional development needs in literacy learning in primary and intermediate grades by providing an instructional framework to support students in their development of reading, writing, and listening/speaking. Teachers use a variety of data to adjust instruction to meet the individual needs of students.
Activities - Students have many opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities. Before- and after-school activities include homework help, Odyssey of the Mind, Daisy Scouts, Kid TV, spelling bee, and after-school clubs. All students in 1st through 5th grade receive weekly instruction in art, music, and physical education. Students participate in an annual winter music program, field day, and spring art show. Intermediate grade students can also be part of an active Student Council. Student Council helps organize school community food drives and school-wide spirit activities and operates a student store.
