Name/History: The school was built in 1976 during the state's centennial and the nation's bicentennial, thus the name.
Mission Statement: To foster a healthy self-concept for each child, to provide opportunities for academic excellence, and to help each child become an independent, responsible individual.
Academic focus - Centennial is a school of best practices using research-based curriculum and strategies. Quality balanced literacy and math instruction that integrates critical thinking takes place on a daily basis.
Environment - A committed and enthusiastic staff makes exceptional efforts towards creating a kind, joyful, caring and respectful learning community. The learning environment promotes curiosity and a love of learning while maintaining high expectations. The teachers have a commitment to improving themselves as professionals to meet each child's unique needs, which may include early intervention.
Positive reinforcement - Centennial's student-centered, positive culture permeates everything that we do! We reinforce student growth and achievement at monthly recognition assemblies. Students "caught" demonstrating positive choices get their name entered into a monthly lottery and enjoy lunch with the principal.
Learning community centered - We encourage parents to volunteer in our classrooms, library, office or other areas. We welcome and value parent input on school-wide decisions through our Accountability Committee or Parent-Teacher Organization. Joint collaboration between staff, students, parents, and community members help Centennial truly be a well-rounded learning community.
Instructional enrichment - Centennial has very strong art, physical education and music programs. With masterful specials teachers, the core curricular areas are imbedded in specials instruction in a natural way. We are fortunate to have such talented and dedicated staff to help students excel in specialty interest areas as well. We participate in Schools on the Move, have a winter music program, a Jump Rope Club, Safe Routes to School "Tennies and Tires" Program, a Bike Rodeo, a PRISM Fair, and a spring Arts, Music and Physical Education Night.
