Expectations

Unlike a regular classroom, students at SOARS will be working on their own, on a variety of different subjects at any one time. There is not a teacher-centered lesson with instruction from the front; rather the students choose a class and work at their own pace. Classes offer a quiet environment which allows for maximum focus for 2 hours.

The program has high standards for student behavior, and the expectations for participants are set out below.

• Parking - In the blue lines, not the numbered staff places
• Breaks - 5 minutes maximum, one student at a time, not to be taken outside
• Smoking - Expressly prohibited anywhere on the premises and/or in cars in the parking lot
• Cell phones - Switched off or on silent in the class. To be used only in an emergency, and will be taken if used (to be returned at the end of class)
• No foul language to be used in class
• No hanging out in the parking lot or at the staff picnic table
• Dress code same as Thompson R2-J high schools

Attendance

• Full 8 hours a week mandatory
• Absences must be reported and called in on the attendance line: 613-7586
• You are counted "present" if you are in class from bell to bell
• Early arrival will result in that extra time being added - you do not get to leave early
• Leaving early for any reason is by prior arrangement - speak to your teacher at the start of class
• Failure to sign out at the office will result in an unexcused absence being recorded
• Leaving early without consideration for the above will result in you being marked absent
