Enrichment Opportunities
Available for students in TSD

Robotics:

TSD has a wide variety of robotics opportunities available for kids from grade three through grade twelve. If you'd like to see this first hand, mark the next TSD Robotics Expo Event on your calendar.

  • The 2012 Thompson Robotics Expo is on October 27, 2012, at Loveland High School.

Spelling Bee: Schools have their own school-wide spelling bees.  Top finishers from each school are eligible to compete in district spelling bees.  Separate district bees are held for middle school and elementary school.  Contact your child's school for information on his/her school spelling bee.
  • The district spelling bee is on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Walt Clark Middle School.
  • Our top six district middle school winners will participate in the State Spelling Bee held in Denver on March 16, 2013.

Odyssey of the Mind:
Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is a creative competition for students in K-12.  Teams work together to craft unique solutions to questions and scenarios posed by the OM organization.
  • Solutions are shared in a regional competition set for Saturday, Marh 16, 2013.
  • Winners of the regional competition go on to the state tournament on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at CSU in Fort Collins.
  • State winners qualify for the World Competition at Michigan State, May 22-26, 2013.

Chess: Two chess competitions are district-sponsored each year for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade:
  • A pre-state scholastic tournament will be held in February 2013 (specific date TBD) at Conrad Ball Middle School.
  • The second tournament will be held on May 4, 2013, at Conrad Ball Middle School. This end-of-year tournament is free and is open to all students enrolled in a TSD school. Check back for registration info.
  • Poudre School District hosts a number of tournaments throughout the year. Thompson School District students are invited to attend. For details go to:

Math Counts: A national math competition for middle school students.  MathCounts involves students in team and/or individual competitions.  The MathCounts school competition was held on February 5, 2011.  The regional competition was held at Colorado State Universtiy on February 26, 2011, and the state competition will be held at University of Denver on March 12, 2011.  The top five competitors at state win a half-tuition scholarship to DU or the Colorado School of Mines.  Questions? Shadows in the Arts:
Students in grades 5-12 are nominated for participation by the art teachers at their schools. Students then gather at a local school for a workshop sponsored by a local artist. Students learn about the medium in which their artists specialize. Previous workshops have taught students about watercolors, drawing, sculpting, and more.
  • The Shadows in the Arts program takes place in late April/early May.

District Science Fair:
Students in K-12 are welcome to participate in the First Annual TSD Science Fair. Project categories include Animal Sciences, Behavioral & Social Sciences, Chemistry, Earth & Space Sciences, Energy & Tranportation, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics & Computer Sciences, Medicine & Health, Microbiology, Physics, and Plant Sciences.
  • The TSD District Science Fair will be held on January 12, 2013, at Thompson Valley High School.
  • Prior to beginning an experiment, required paperwork must be completed.
